Using the Ultimate Sire Ratings Higher is better

This Question is often asked to PTS Customers as well as yours truly.

For the most part what we are looking for is a horse with a high number that is: 240 or more on an off track and 230 or more on the turf. In addition an ideal situation would be one where there is a ten point
or so drop down to the next best number.  I am a huge disciple of bothtrainers and value.  I probably would play a horse with a slightly lower number if the second best horse had a much better conditioner or was much longer odds.

In races contested on off tracks, USR ratings work just as well at any distance.  However this is not the case in turf racing.  On the grass the longer the race the more important breeding becomes.  In fact in
grass sprints, that is races contested at distances of less than a mile, breeding is of rather limited importance.

Observations

   1. Always keep in mind that the rating of the broodmare's sire is
      very important.
   2. Turf horses with exceptional breeding often improve dramatically
      in their second lifetime start on the lawn.
   3. If a well bred turf horse has done little after three or four
      grass races, chances are he or she will never amount to much.
   4. Ratings of first crop sires often change drastically.
   5. When the numbers are working well be more aggressive but when they
      are cold be more cautious.
   6. Ratings in state bred races often do not work as well.
